Miss Jen Magill, Consultant Paediatric ENT Surgeon at the Portland Hospital, has been featured in a new Stylist magazine article exploring what it really takes for women to reach the top of their professions.

The piece, “The reality behind 6 of the UK’s highest paid jobs – by the women who are in them,” spoke to six women across medicine, law, tech and business about the rewards and the sacrifices behind their success. Jen was one of them, sharing an honest account of life as a surgeon and a mum of seven-year-old twins.

She spoke candidly about the pressures women in surgery still face — the long hours and the “mum guilt” that comes with balancing a demanding career and a young family. But she was equally clear about how much she loves what she does: “You don’t go into medicine for the money or the kudos; it’s about knowing you’ve done a good job for a patient. I’m so lucky to do what I do. If you cut through that to the heart of medicine and being a surgeon – it’s all worth it. I would 100% recommend my job to anyone.”

Jen also spoke about wanting to challenge the idea that women have to sacrifice softness or kindness to succeed in surgery. At the Portland, this warmth and dedication is exactly what families see every day. Jen brings the same care and compassion she gives her own children to every child she treats; whether that’s a straightforward tonsillectomy or a family navigating a more complex diagnosis.
