About Sore Throats

Sore throats are incredibly common in children, from toddlers through to teenagers. They can cause discomfort, poor sleep, difficulty eating or drinking, and repeated days off school. Most sore throats are caused by viral infections, but bacterial infections like strep throat (streptococcal pharyngitis) can also be a culprit – especially when sore throats keep coming back.

You might be wondering when a sore throat is just part of growing up, and when it’s worth seeing a specialist. If your child is having recurrent sore throats (several in a year), it may be a sign that their tonsils (or adenoids) are contributing, or that further treatment is needed to improve their quality of life.

Diagnosis

When I see a child with frequent sore throats, I start by taking a careful history—how often infections happen, how long they last, and how much they impact your child’s day-to-day life. I’ll also examine your child’s throat, tonsils, and neck glands. Depending on the pattern and severity of symptoms, I may suggest:

  • Discussing past infections and frequency of antibiotics and GP visits
  • A check of the nose, ears and throat
  • I may carry out a flexible nasal endoscopy (a tiny camera gently passed through the nose), which can often be done quickly in my consulting room

Treatments

Most sore throats in children get better on their own with rest and fluids. But when infections keep happening—or they’re severe—there are several options we can explore:

  • Antibiotics may be used if a bacterial cause is confirmed.
  • For children with recurrent tonsillitis (a sore throat caused by inflamed or infected tonsils), we may consider tonsillectomy (removal of the tonsils). This is especially appropriate if your child has multiple episodes per year and is missing school.
